Bal Thackeray was an Indian politician who founded the Shiv Sena, a right-wing regional party in Maharashtra, in 1966. He began his career as a political cartoonist before building a mass political movement centred on Marathi identity and Hindutva. He wielded significant influence over Maharashtra and Mumbai politics for decades without ever holding elected office.
