Amitabh Bachchan was born on 11 October 1942 in Allahabad — now Prayagraj — the son of the Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. On 11 October 2026 he turns 84.
A coincidence worth noticing
He made his debut in Saat Hindustani in 1969. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest honour in cinema, was created that same year.
Fifty years later it came to him: he was named for the 2018 award and received it in 2019. A career can be measured in films, or in money, or in awards. His can also be measured against the lifetime of the prize itself, which began when he did.
Still working
The detail that says most about 84 is not a film. It is Kaun Banega Crorepati, which he has hosted since 2000 — twenty-six years of sitting opposite strangers and asking them questions. Most actors of his standing would have handed a weekly television commitment to somebody else long ago.
The honours
He holds all three Padma awards — Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, the last of them in 2015 — alongside the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
And one record that is easy to miss: four National Film Awards for Best Actor — for Agneepath (1990), Black (2005), Paa (2009) and Piku (2015). No other actor in the history of Indian cinema has won that award four times. Note the gap between the first and the last: twenty-five years.
What is planned for the day
Nothing has been announced. His eightieth, in 2022, was marked with a film festival of his work, and his birthday has for years drawn crowds to the gate of his Mumbai home. Whether 84 gets anything similar is not yet known, and we would rather tell you that than print a guess.
