Malhar Rao Holkar was a Maratha nobleman who served as a Subedar (military commander) of the Maratha Empire and founded the Holkar dynasty that ruled the state of Indore in central India. Rising from humble origins, he became one of the principal Maratha chieftains in the Malwa region during the 18th century.
