Bal Gangadhar Tilak was an Indian nationalist, teacher, and independence activist, one of the first leaders of the Indian freedom movement. A scholar and writer, he was popularly known as Lokmanya, and he championed the cause of Swaraj (self-rule). He founded newspapers and authored works on Indian philosophy and history.
